Do you enjoy eating food grown in other parts of the country? You can thank Frederick McKinley Jones. In 1938, he invented a portable air-cooling unit for trucks, and later he adapted it to fit trains and aquatic vehicles. Not only did this invention allow fresh produce to be available all over the country, but it saved countless lives in WWII by allowing blood to be transported to the front lines. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush posthumously awarded the National Medal of Technology to Jones. He was the first black American to receive the award.
