On the first week of Black History Month, we are sharing the story of Thomas L. Jennings, the first African American to receive a US patent. In 1821, the tailor received a patent for “dry-scouring”, a new process for dry-cleaning delicate clothing. With the earnings from his invention, he freed his enslaved family members.
