Blanche Ames was an artist, activist, and inventor. Though she was best known for her political cartoons that focused on women’s suffrage, Ames spent the majority of her life inventing. In 1927, Ames and her brother received a patent for a system of color standards that allowed artists to map out colors for their paintings. Over 60 years later, she was granted her last patent, an environmentally friendly anti-pollution sewage system. It was granted in 1970, a year after she died at the age of 91.
